Search In Transcript is a Chrome extension and website made by Creative Loog. This page explains, in plain words, what is collected and what is not.
The short version
- Your transcripts, your searches and the videos you look at stay in your browser. We never receive them.
- The extension sends anonymous usage counts (for example "a search was made" or "a run finished with 25 videos") so we know what to improve. You can switch this off in the extension's settings.
- We do not sell data, show ads, or ask you to create an account.
What the extension does
When you press Run, the extension reads the list of videos on the YouTube page you are on and asks YouTube for their captions, the same captions anyone can see on YouTube. These requests go directly from your browser to YouTube. They are sent without your YouTube login cookies.
The collected transcripts are saved in your browser's local extension storage (your most recent sets) and, if you choose, downloaded to your computer as a JSON file. Files you open in the extension are read only on your computer.
Anonymous usage statistics (extension)
To understand how many people use the extension and which features help, it sends anonymous events to Google Analytics 4. Each event contains only:
- the event name, such as search, run_finished, result_played or extension_installed;
- simple counts and on/off flags, such as the number of videos in a run, the number of results, or whether a search used quotes;
- a random ID created on install (not linked to your name, email or Google account), the extension version and your browser language.
It never sends your search words, video IDs, video titles, page addresses, transcripts or browsing history. To turn it off, open the extension menu, click the settings icon, and switch off Share anonymous usage stats.
This website
searchintranscript.com uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and button clicks. Google Analytics may set cookies to tell new and returning visitors apart. For visitors in the EU, UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are off by default and only cookieless, aggregated measurement is used. Advertising features are switched off. The live demo on the home page runs entirely in your browser on sample text.
Permissions the extension asks for
- Access to youtube.com: to add the button to YouTube, find the videos on the page and fetch their captions.
- Storage and unlimited storage: to save your settings and recent transcript sets on your computer, which can be large.
- Scripting: to add the button to YouTube tabs that were already open when you installed the extension.
Third parties
YouTube (Google) receives the caption requests your browser makes. Google Analytics receives the anonymous counts described above. Patreon handles payments if you choose to support the project; we only see what Patreon shows creators (your Patreon name and tier).
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
